Lois Jean Stevenson, of Greeley, passed away at her home on July 19, 2012. She was born in Bobtown, KY to William Claude Smith and Pearl (Poynter). Her early years were spent in Bloomington/Normal, IL where she graduated from Normal High School. She married Donald R. Coffey and later married Edward R. Stevenson on August 3, 1968 in Greeley.
Lois worked at State Farm for 43 years, retiring in 2003 as a Senior Claim Automation and Procedure Specialist II in Fire Claims. She began her long, successful and rewarding career in 1959 in Bloomington, IL as a Policy Typist. She joined the fire claim operation in 1959 as a claim superintendent's secretary in Lincoln, NE. She became a charter member of the Mountain States Region in 1963 working as secretary to Mountain States' first fire claim superintendent. In April 1970, Lois earned a promotion to office claim representative and helped develop the initial regional office centralized fire claim operation. She quickly earned a reputation with the home office as one of, if not the best, procedures training specialists. As a result of her achievements in this position, Mountain States became a model for other regions. Lois was an invaluable asset to the Mountain States special disaster program. She was primarily responsible for developing the region's highly effective storm office procedures. She was always one of the first people on the scene setting up the office and training the clerical staff.
She is survived by children Karen Coffey of Greeley, CO, David Stevenson of Anchorage, AK and Tammie Schaeffer of Briggsdale, CO, She is also survived by siblings, Francis Mead of Bloomington, Il, Louise Smith of Bloomington, IL, Ronald Smith of Henderson, NV, Joyce Ann Scott of Arizona City, AZ, Judy Marshall of Bloomington, IL, and Donald Smith of Colorado Springs, CO; half brothers and sisters Bud Smith, of Heyworth, Il., James C. Smith of Australia, Edward Smith of Peoria, Il, Tracy Smith of Rowlette Texas, Chris Smith of Cocoa Beach, FL, Arleen Hunicutt of Jacksonville, FL, and five grandchildren, Jenna, Samantha, Katie Jo, Brittni, Josh and one great grandchild Mia Rose and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lois enjoyed being with family and friends, traveling, fishing, and spending time at their cabin in Ogallala, NE. She was a sports fan especially of the Bronco's and Rockies. She was a loving, giving and devoted mother; wife, sister, and aunt. She was fun to be with and a wonderful and special friend to all who knew her. She truly loved life and will be so greatly missed. She is preceded in death by her parents; sibling eldest brother Clayton Smith and sister Doris Ann Smith (died at birth).
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday July 25, 2012 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 1800 21st Avenue in Greeley.
