Obituary

Gerald Martin Meis (Jerry) was born in Sharon Springs, Kansas on May 14, 1928. He passed away on May 25, 2023, at the age of 95.

His parents were dry land farmers in Kansas. The dust bowl caused them to move to Colorado to start over.

Before enlisting in the Navy in 1944 at the age of 16, he worked for John Strohauer on his farm. Jerry was employed at several companies including Loade

He met the love of his life, Jeannie Chessmore, in 1950. They met at Waranoco Skating Rink in Greeley, Colorado. They were married on July 12, 1952, in Portland, Oregon. They moved to Colorado in 1956 and were blessed with four children, Alan "Marty", Clarence "Buster", Jeanette and Anita. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Greeley and the Rocky Mountain Church in Estes Park.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Meis, daughters, Jeanette and Anita Meis, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Meis, three grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Margaret Meis, sons, Alan Martin "Marty" and Clarence Dean "Buster" Meis, a brother, John Meis, sisters, Ann Stroh, Betty Condreay, Eleanor Darling, Kathryn Krois, and his daughter-in-law, Halina Meis.

Jerry was a farmer, welder and upholsterer. He specialized in reupholstering antiques. He loved to restyle old furniture to give it a more contemporary look.

He loved working with children. He was a Boy Scout Leader for 18 years. He helped with many projects at Colorado Camp Cherith and Bethel Baptist Church. He helped children in all these ministries to earn badges and learn new skills.

He was a quiet man with a servant's heart. His family was so important to him, and he showed it in many ways such as remolding, upholstering, building projects, lending a helping hand and just being him. His gentle, giving spirit touched many lives through acts of kindness: snow removal for a neighbor in need, teaching children how to build fires for a badge, teaching kids how to play baseball, sewing for others and so many other acts that it would take pages and pages to list them all.

He will be greatly missed but has left behind a legacy for generations to come.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the Bethel Baptist Church, 2307 17th Avenue in Greeley. Interment will follow at Linn Grove Cemetery.
