Alfred (AL) W. Laser, 99, husband, father and grandfather died on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, in Sandy, Utah. He was born on February 03, 1926, in Shelby, Ohio. He is the son of Alva M. Laser and Hazel Mary (Wayt) Laser.
He had his formative years during the great depression and was well acquainted with hard work and austerity. He attended public schools at Shiloh, Ohio, graduating in 1944. After Graduating he entered The U.S. Navy and served on two ships in The Pacific Campaign during WW-II. At the end of the war, he was involved in the initial occupation at Sasebo, Japan.
He married Shirley Elaine Weaver, daughter of Clarence L Weaver & Eleanor J. (Kochheiser) on 08 January 1949 in Bellville, Ohio. One son Jeffrey Lynn was born to that marriage. He married Alma Dale Daron, daughter of Everett & Mae (Thompson) Daron of Flat Rock, Il on April 28, 1973, in Washington, D.C.
After leaving the Navy, Al was one of the last to fire steam locomotives on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Al later worked in several locations including the distribution dept. of the Ohio Edison Co. Mansfield, Ohio; was a Deputy Sheriff in Richland County, Mansfield, Ohio; entered the electrical trade and worked for various companies in several states including working as a maintenance electrician on the Gatun Locks of the Panama Canal. Retired from American Airlines at Washington D.C. as an electrician and building maintenance mechanic in 1985.
He was a life member of John Blair Lodge 187 AF&AM, Alexandria, Virginia; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Alexandria Orient of Virginia; El Jebel Shrine, AAONMS, Denver Colorado; Jessica Callahan Chapter 91, Order of the Eastern Star, Alexandria, Virginia; BPOE (Elks) Lodge, 2188 Fairfax Virginia; and a life member in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was active in several computer clubs. In politics he always supported the Democratic Party.
He and Alma moved to Colorado in 1986. Together, they built their retirement home there. He spent his leisure years in his woodworking shop and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, son Jeffrey Lynn, sisters, Mary Alice (Denis Davis,) and Willough Nadine (Russell Morris) of Shelby, Ohio; Margaret Eldora (Carl Willford) of Plymouth, Ohio; Juanita Mae (Cloyd Baker) of Mansfield, Ohio; and brother Thomas Alva (Sara Seaman) Laser of Fairfield, Pennsylvania.
Survivors include his wife, Alma, grandchildren; Charity Laser (Lee Hester), Chelsea Laser, and Celeste (Adam Hidey), and three great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be held at the Johnstown Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2025.
