August "Gus" Schneider, 95 of Greeley, was born November 10, 1917 and passed away on September 20, 2013 at the age of 95 in Greeley, Colorado. Gus was born in Brush, Colorado to Carl and Katherine (Dummler) Schneider who were Germans from Russia and came to the United States in 1912 from Grimm, Russia. As a young lad his family moved to Sterling, where he attended Trinity Lutheran School. His family farmed and Gus grew up working in the beet fields and doing other farm work. He entered the military service in January of 1942. After basic he went to Machinist School in Springfield, Mass and then went overseas to the European theater. He was discharged in October, 1945. On May 26, 1946 he married G. Jewel Sanders in Sterling. Gus worked for Great Western Sugar Company as a Master Mechanic at factories in Sterling, Lovell, Wyo., Mitchell, Neb., Billings, Mont., Findlay, Ohio, Brighton and Longmont, Colo. He and his wife moved to Arvada, Colo., where he was a Senior Buyer for Great Western in the Denver office before he retired in 1980. He took up wood working and made many beautiful pieces of oak furniture for all of his family as well as Rocking Horses, Cedar chests, toys, etc., for his grandchildren. In 1985 they moved to Greeley. In 2011 he moved to Fair Acres Manor and resided there until his death. He and his wife enjoyed several trips to Europe as well as traveling by motor home to most of the US and parts of Canada. They also spent many winters in Arizona. He enjoyed playing golf and baseball and was a Broncos and Rockies Fan. He loved camping and hiking in the mountains and going to polka dances. Gus was a life member of VFW Post 01771, Lafayette, Colo., and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife Jewel of 67 years who lives in Greeley, son Daniel (Diane) Schneider of Breckenridge, Colo., daughter Nancy Sollee of Colorado Springs, Colo., daughter Cynthia (Richard) Gulisano of Torrington, Wyo.; grandsons Daniel (Meagan) Sollee Jr., Chad (Christy) Conrad, Jeff (Savannah) Conrad; granddaughters Tina (Tom) Adams, Kelli (Brad) Shannon and Erika (Nick) Lyon. He also has seven great-grandchildren: Ashton and Quinn Sollee, Alex Conrad, Brayden and Ethan Conrad, Breck Shannon and Drake Lyon. One brother, Elmer (Ginger) Schneider, two sisters; Florence (LaVern) Weber and Frieda Grunczewski. Sister-in-law Jen DeSoto and brother-in-law Wendell Sanders. He has many nieces and nephews as well. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, one brother-in-law and one grandson. A funeral service to celebrate Gus' life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 3000 35th Avenue in Greeley. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service on Tuesday at the church. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran School, 3000 35th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado, 80634 or a memorial of your choice.
