Cherie Mae Cox

Cherie Mae Cox, a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and faithful servant of God, passed away on January 18, 2026, surrounded by family. She was 60 years old. Cherie was born on July 3, 1965, in Dalton, Nebraska. She was the beloved daughter to Rich and Carol (Bayne) Hazlitt along with her three siblings, Nancy, Susie, and Richie. Cherie grew up in Sidney, Nebraska where she proudly won two state volleyball championships before graduating in 1983. She later attended college in Rapid City, SD and Kearney, NE, ultimately moving back to Cheyenne County, NE where she started her career in the oil and gas industry. Cherie was united in marriage with her beloved husband, Charlie Cox, on December 4, 1993, in Estes Park, Colorado. They lived several years in Gurley, Nebraska, raising their three children and then relocated to Eaton, Colorado in 2003. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories, especially family camping trips to Steamboat Reservoir—a place that held her heart. Cherie lived a life defined by care for others. She was the person so many listed as their emergency contact—the one who showed up without hesitation, who listened without judgment, and who gave freely of her time, energy, and heart. Helping others wasn’t something she did; it was who she was. Even in death, Cherie continued the work of her life: giving to others. As an organ donor, she made the selfless choice to offer life when her own had ended. Through this final act of generosity, Cherie has already saved four lives. Her gift is a powerful reflection of who she was—someone who put others first. Cherie’s faith was the foundation of her life. She loved Jesus deeply and trusted God fully. Her generosity, compassion, and servant’s heart reflected Christ’s love in action, and her life was a testament to quiet, faithful care for others. Cherie is survived by her husband, Charlie Cox; her children, Felecia (Troy) Lessman of Fort Collins, CO; Haley Cox of New Haven, CT; and Anthony Cox of Evans, CO; her granddaughter, Holly of Fort Collins, CO; her sister Nancy (Keith) Hughes; her brother Rich Hazlitt; sister-in-laws Sue (David) Meechum, Sandy (Jim) Bain; brother-in-laws Fred (Barbara) Cox, Bill (Lois) Cox; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends and extended family who were blessed by her kindness and steady presence. She is preceded in death by her parents Rich and Carol (Bayne) Hazlitt, her sister Susie McMillen, her niece Melisa McMillen, mother and father-in-law Fred and Anna (Hamilton) Cox, sister-in-law Joyce Evans, brother-in-law Delbert Evans. Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing Cherie is now at peace, held in God’s arms, and that her legacy lives on—not only in those who loved her, but in the lives she saved. We imagine her hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” A service to celebrate Cherie’s life will be held on Friday January 23rd at 10:30 am at Moser Funeral Home (3501 11th Ave, Evans, CO 80620) followed by a brief graveside service at Eaton Cemetery and a luncheon at the Eaton Recreation Center. A viewing will precede the service on Thursday January 22nd from 3-7pm at Moser Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Cherie by caring for others—just as she always did or donating to a charity of your choice in her name.
