Dorothy May (Nitzel) Gurney, died on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at her home. She was born on May 22, 1917 in Cowles, Nebraska to Henry and Lorena (Shull) Nitzel. Dorothy went to school in Bayton, Nebraska and graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1935. She later married Clyde W. Gurney in May 5, 1935 in Smith Center, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 20, 1995. The couple moved to Evans, Colorado in November of 1936. They owned and operated Greeley Glass and Paint for many years, where she worked at the bookkeeper for the business. After selling the business they owned Western Home Improvement along with their son Richard. Following their retirement, she and Clyde traveled many states doing sales work as C & D Sales. Mrs. Gurney was a member of Broadview Park Church where she enjoyed the women's group & helping with bazaars. Dorothy and Clyde started the R.V. Club, Red Dale Rovers and enjoyed traveling in their R.V. She loved to cook for her families. Her grandkids referred to grandma Dot as the flower fairy. In the spring she would go to their houses and pick up empty flower pots and bring them back filled with flowers. She always made Christmas ornaments made from plastic art canvas for the whole family. When the great grandchildren came to play, she was always ready to get out the cards, checkers, Lincoln Logs, and play house with Laura. When she still had good eyesight, she enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and word search. She had crocheted afghans for everyone in the family. Survivors include her companion, Louis Watkins of Greeley; a son and his wife, Richard A. and Sharon Gurney of Greeley; 2 grandsons and their wives, Jeffery and Eva Gurney and Jay and Debbie Gurney all of Greeley; 3 great grandchildren, Kyle, Casey and Laura Gurney all of Greeley; a brother, Wayne Nitzel of Greeley; a step son and his wife, Larry and Kim Watkins of Castle Rock, Colorado; a step daughter and her husband, Joyce and Mark Atkins of Golden, Colorado; 5 step grandchildren, Micah, Nathan and Kellyn Watkins all of Castle Rock and Seth and Brody Atkins both of Golden. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by 2 sisters and her parents. A funeral service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007 at the Moser Funeral Service Chapel, 3501 S. 11th Avenue in Evans. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Moser Funeral Service Chapel.
