Douglas Paul Melby, 64, of Evans passed away Sunday, July 28, at North Colorado Medical Center surrounded by his family and many friends.
He was born June 11, 1949 in Canby, Minn. and moved to Evans in 1953. Doug married Sherry Norland on April 1, 1976. They had 2 daughters, Nikki Hader (husband Chris Hader) and Michelle Shaffer. He loved his 3 grandchildren, Dillon and Ashlee Hader and Brandon Shaffer.
He devoted his entire career to the fire service, starting with the Evans Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16 and the Western Hills Fire Department as a paid Fire Fighter. He served the City of Evans as Fire Marshal from 1984 to 2010 when he retired. Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing volleyball and watching his grandchildren play sports.
Survivors include his wife Sherry Melby; daughter and son in law Nikki and Chris Hader and daughter Michelle Shaffer; 3 grandchildren, Dillon and Ashlee Hader and Brandon Shaffer; 2 brothers, Dean Melby and Red Melby (wife Dawn) and one sister Debbie Pattan (husband Dave). His father DeLon Melby and mother Donna Detter preceded him in death.
A funeral service to celebrate Doug's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Greeley Wesleyan Church, 3600 W. 22nd Street. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Moser Funeral Service Chapel, 3501 S. 11th Avenue in Evans.
