Eleanor Marie Godsey, 97, passed peacefully in her home in Greeley on July 11, 2018 with her family.
She was born in Gothenburg Nebraska to Elmer and Signe Thelin. Elmer died when she was very young - she grew up learning to work as she helped her mother and brothers support themselves by providing room and board for teachers. Like her mother, she became a Christian as a young girl, and her faith and love for Christ were the consistent foundations of her life. She had a happy childhood and enjoyed learning, especially world geography.
Graduating valedictorian of her class, she decided to attend Business College in Denver and ended up staying there. She loved and visited the mountains often with friends and roommates. While hosting at a USO dance, she met Robert Godsey. When he returned from service in Germany in 1946, they married.
She worked to put Robert through school for his teaching degree at Denver University. They eventually settled in Walled Lake Michigan and had two children, Luann and Steve. When the marriage ended suddenly in 1962, she had to return to work. She eventually moved to Greeley because of wonderful relatives there, and the family flourished. She became a faithful member at Greeley Covenant Church and passed on to her whole family an enduring spiritual heritage. Eleanor was known and appreciated for her joy in simple pleasures, her generosity, and her concern for other’s needs.
She was preceded in death by brothers Roland, Farrell and Burt. Survivors include Luann James and her husband Dennis with sons Ryan and Evan and their families; Steve Godsey and sons Nathan, Daniel, Joshua, Jonathan, Micah, Michael Biswell and their families, including 17 great-grandchildren. She lived and died surrounded by the love of her family.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at St. Patrick's Presbyterian Church, 803 10th Avenue in Greeley.
