Obituary

Elizabeth ("Betty") Ann Kopsa, 92, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley from a 5-day bout with Covid-19.

She was born in Port Edwards, Wisconsin to Elmer Theodore Smith and Lucille Madeline Smith (Joseph) April 18, 1929.

Elizabeth grew up in Wisconsin, was the eldest of 3 children, and graduated from High School in 1945. After medical training in Minneapolis she moved to Greeley in 1947 to work as a phlebotomist at The Greeley Hospital, 16th Street and 11th Avenue.

Elizabeth had a Midwest sense of humor, devout Methodist, kind, loyal, quiet, determined, and smart.

Elizabeth married Wesley Ernest Kopsa on August 10, 1949 in Port Edwards, Wisconsin and returned to Colorado, living first in Sterling and returning to Greeley. They had a son in 1951 who died shortly after birth, and a daughter Mary Elizabeth in 1952.

In the mid-1960's Elizabeth went back to school to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) and received her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Education. She particularly liked geography. She worked as a receptionist for the Colorado State Department of Rehabilitation with blind and disabled people for about 25 years.

She enjoyed: reading books (voracious reader), playing piano, music programs and plays at UNC and from Broadway, Rocky Mountain and other National Parks, Greeley Stampede parade and rodeo, word search books, crocheting afghans, making x-mas candy and cookies mixed trays to give away, and learning.

She was a member of: United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women (UMW) since the 1950's; Elderberries - Methodist senior group that went on one-day field trips to visit places that restored WWII war planes, or determined worldwide earthquake intensities; Amigo Club - senior citizens gathered for a formal dinner and to hear a speaker or entertainment; Sewing for Service - UMW group that sewed about 200 quilts each year to give away; and Retired Service Volunteer Program (RSVP).

She is survived by her only child, Mary Elizabeth Kopsa, her brother John Smith, and 14, nieces and nephews. The nieces are: Helen Haskell, Dorothy Cole, Cathi Wilson, Marilyn Stone, Beth Rawlinson, Kay McKee. The nephews are: Brian Kopsa, Gary Kopsa, Frank Brown, Joe Brown, Harry Brown, Steve Brown, Robert Graham, John Hamilton.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille Bandy, father, husband, and sisters Catherine Hamilton and Francis Graham.

Funeral service will be held at 10 am on Monday, October 11, 2021 at the United Methodist Church, 917 Tenth Avenue, Greeley, Colorado 80631. Interment Linn Grove Cemetery
