Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and embodiment of “The Greatest Generation”, went on to touch the face of God the evening of Saturday, December 20, 2014.

A native New Yorker, Ellsworth was born to Charles and Ruth (Enfield) Lichtenberger on September 6, 1923. He shared wonderful memories of growing up in Brooklyn playing stickball on the streets & enjoying Halloween pranks back in the days of ice truck deliveries; of being able to take his date to Broadway shows for just a few bucks.

He was accepted to Brooklyn Technical High School, where he trained for his career as a draftsman for Bell Telephone Laboratories. Upon graduating, he volunteered to serve his country in the Air Force, participating in the effort in the Pacific Theatre in both the Philippines and New Guinea. He returned home to marry his favorite pin-up girl, the beautiful Helen Schmidt; they were married 68 years at the time of his passing.

Ells & Helen made their home first, in Massapequa Park, NY and later in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, where they raised their sons. Fond memories include long, cross-country family camping trips; playing hockey on the neighborhood pond, even long after his own boys had left for college, sometimes daring the local police to come & get them if he wanted them off the ice. Ells was a huge sports fan and spoke of watching the Brooklyn Dodgers in Dodger Stadium; the New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden.

An example to family & friends, he kept his body and brain very active and fit, putting many of us to shame by continuing to go to the gym three times a week well into his 90th year. For those of us having too little time to keep up on current events, he was our go-to guy for world goings-on.

Throughout his 91 years, Ellsworth remained active and involved in the world. He and Helen travelled extensively in their later years. Their last big adventure was a long-awaited trip to Egypt in 2005 at the ages of 82; something they had dreamed about as kids visiting the NY Museum of Natural History.

Those blessed to have had Ellsworth in their lives include his wife, Helen & their dear little Daisy; his sons & daughters-in-law Bruce & Janice and Wayne & Marcia; his grandkids & spouses, Kristi & Rick Thomas and Kim & Bill Williams; great-grandkids Bryce, Reese & Leah Thomas and Bailey & Allison Williams; his sister, Ruth Griffin & family; sister-in-law, Joan Lichtenberger & family and many valued friends.

Ells’ wish was to be cremated and his ashes scattered in the beautiful mountains; there are no other services planned.
