Obituary

August 19, 1934 - March 12, 2016 — Gerald L Kummer was born to Fred and Hannah Kummer. He was born on the homestead of his Russian immigrant grandparents in the Pawnee National Grasslands, Keota, CO. He spent all but 10 years of his life here on the plains and dearly loved riding many horses across this country and taking care of the place where he and his wife, Portia, spent their 44 years together. He had a vast knowledge of the history of the area and shared many memories featuring the people, activities, weather and other notable events.

He loved his Savior, Jesus Christ, and spent every early morning with Him. He prayed daily for our country and its leaders and devoted 3 years to serving in the military. His priorities in life were to raise his family to love the Lord, do a job well, be honest and treat others fairly. Keeping in shape through working outdoors with horses and making sure he ate well and was adequately rested were daily priorities. He shod all of his own horses even in his seventies.

The whole family participated in their livelihood of training horses and there was never a shortage of well broke, good using horses around the place. Roping was of utmost importance throughout their lives and Gerald & Portia enjoyed team roping together.

He loved to fix things in his shop and take care of his machinery - he was meticulous about
maintenance. Sentimental about equipment and tools, he kept nearly everything that his folks had owned and usually found ways to repurpose it. He had an appreciation for the simple things in life, hot showers, good-fitting clothing, home-cooked meals, and tidiness.

Gerald had a love of basketball that started in the 4th grade when he played at the Keota School. He dearly loved watching the local high school basketball teams play.

Gerald is preceded in death by his father (daddy), Fred Kummer and his mother, Hannah Kummer.

Left to live his legacy are: wife, Portia, two step daughters whom he called his own, Melanie Idler & Mike, Brenda Brunelle & Tim, his son and little buddy, Coy Kummer & Maesa. His precious grand daughters, Karysa Idler, Gracyn & Elle Kummer. His grandsons and basketball heroes Cody & Brye Brunelle and oldest and boldest with 6 children, Joshua Idler & Ashley. One brother, Freddie Kummer & Judy. Sister Bernice Winsett & Hulan.

Gerald’s church affiliation is the Body of Christ.
