Obituary

James Michael Scofield "Jim", 73, of Eaton, Colorado passed away at his home on Sunday, February 16, 2025, with his family and his loyal canine companion, Bailey, by his side.

Jim was born on December 3, 1951, in Greeley, CO to Floyd and Floy (Keener) Scofield. He graduated from Eaton High School in 1969 where he excelled in swimming. He was part of the first team to take state under coach Hasty, swimming butterfly in the 200 Individual Medley Relay his senior year. It was the first Colorado state championship by a Double A School in swimming. At the time all schools in the state competed with each other, there were no divisions in swimming, with Eaton beating Manual High School which held the state title for years. He later attended Aims Community College.

Mr. Scofield married Judy M. Helzer on March 20, 1970, in Greeley, CO. Jim and Judy enjoyed almost 55 years of marriage. They raised 2 sons, Shane and Ryan, which Jim considered the greatest accomplishment of his life. He taught his family camping, hunting and fishing skills and was always there for their activities and greatest accomplishments. Jim provided guidance and encouragement and took pride in being the father of two active boys and later, two fine young men.

Jim worked for Hensel Phelps Construction Company, for his dad, Floyd Scofield, at Scofield's Architectural Metals, Inc, was Vice-President of Rankin Constructors for a time and worked in the construction division at both Monfort and Con-Agra. He completed his career as owner and operator of Eaglestone Corporation Constructors for more than 20 years. Jim worked for many owners in the Greeley and surrounding areas building unique quality commercial projects for them, many times providing an accessory he knew they wanted at his own expense. Jim built most of the commercial buildings in the Fox Run Business Park in Greeley. Over the years he also built many lasting friendships with project owners, subcontractors, engineers and building inspectors in the northern Colorado area. He was well respected in his trade and even was awarded the 2007 Commercial Builder Award from Atmos Energy.

Jim enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family cabin at Red Feather Lakes, one of his specialties was entertaining guests by cooking up a Cajun boil. He taught many to fish and enjoyed sharing the cabin with everyone; It was a special treat to host his swim coach, Jim Hasty, whom he immensely admired, and wife Judy and friend Ben (Mitchell) Manzanares.

In retirement he enjoyed making rings from coins, making bowls, plates and vases from exotic woods on his lathe. He and his wife, Judy, spent many hours in his woodshop working on projects on the lathe and the scroll saw. They also spent a lot of time at the Eaton Area Recreation Center in the swimming pool where Jim taught Judy to swim after fifty years of marriage. Many people at the pool complimented him on the butterfly stroke he swam at more than seventy years of age.

Jim was a kind and compassionate individual, always willing to help anyone in need. He rescued a father and son from a capsized canoe on a cold spring day at Dowdy Lake near Red Feather Lakes, CO. He was unable to rescue another man with them who drowned before Jim could get back to him; that affected him deeply for many, many years. Jim never returned to Dowdy Lake again. He was recognized with a ceremony and medal by the Larimer County Sheriff's Department for his heroism.

Survivors include his wife, Judy, sons Shane and Ryan, brother Rick Scofield, sister Deb and brother-in-law, Pat Sherin, mother-in-law Florence Helzer and uncle Steve Keener. He is also survived by niece Mindy Scofield, nephews Neil Scofield, Nathan Scofield, Jerimy Sherin and James Sherin, several cousins and many, many friends he made along the way. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Floyd and Floy Scofield and his father-in-law Ray Helzer and beloved sister-in-law, Doris Scofield.
