Joan Carol Bartels, 77 of Greeley, Colorado died on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the North Colorado Medical Center.
She was born on May 30, 1929 in Daykin, Nebraska to Laurence and Lena (Lewis) Wheeler.
Joan graduated from high school in Western, Nebraska in 1946. She went on to teach in a country school in rural Nebraska for 2 years.
She married Derald D. Bartels on June 23, 1948 in Daykin, Nebraska at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bartels was a homemaker until her children were in school. She later worked for Dr. G. Fowler in DeWitt, Nebraska where she worked for 4 years. She went on to work for the DeWitt State Bank until they moved to Blytheville, Arkansas. Later they moved to Junction City, Kansas where she and Derald purchased Jayhawk Sporting Goods which they owned and operated until they moved to Demming, New Mexico. They lived in Demming until moving to Greeley in 2002.
Survivors include her husband, Derald D. Bartels of Greeley; 2 sons, Laurence Bartels & his wife, Korin of Hastings, Nebraska and Dean Bartels of Greeley; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and a sister, Bernice Schultz of Monroe, Louisiana. She is preceded in death by a son, Mark Allen Bartels in 1982 and 3 brothers.
A memorial service to celebrate Joan's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at the Bonnell Good Samaritan Center Borgmann Chapel, 708 22nd Street in Greeley. Her urn will be interred at a later date in the Dewitt Cemetery in Dewitt, Nebraska.
