John Rayburn, 96, veteran news and sports broadcaster passed away Sunday, 5/19, in his home.
John is survived by his wife Carol, and his four children, Lisa Cole , Jon Scott Rayburn, Debra Hiss, and Dan Rayburn with 7 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grand Children. A family celebration of his life is planned at a later date.
Out of the Navy at 19, he started his broadcast career in Cape Girardeau moving on to Peoria, Kansas City, and Denver as a news anchor and sportscaster. John's 43-year Denver broadcast history includes all three network affiliated stations, Denver Bronco pre-season games, DU Hockey, and the Denver Bears baseball. During this span, he interviewed celebrities from many walks of life including 5 presidents, numerous Sports figures, Big Band Leaders, and movie and TV stars.
Over the years, he also aired on many national broadcasts and was inducted into the Broadcast Professionals Hall of Fame.
He hosted Senior Showcase on PBS for 9 years after he retired from the news as well as having a talk show, an old time-radio show and Big Band shows in the Denver Market.
He recorded dozens of books for the National Library Service and narrated innumerable Radio/TV recordings, authored 12 books and recorded hundreds of audio books.
His memorable television sign off was, "May all Your news be Good news."
