Maurice Eugene "Gene" Killifer, 70 of Ovid, Colorado died on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at University Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. Gene was born on July 21, 1937 in Streator, Illinois to Ralph and Mabel Louis (Phillips) Killifer. He spent his childhood years on the family farm in Illinois and later spent his teen years in Munich, Germany. He later moved to Youngstown, New York where he met and married Linda Pierce. The couple had 3 children, Gloria, Maurie and Libby. The couple divorced and he later married Kathleen Opfer in Ovid, Colorado. They had two daughters, Kimberly and Marcie. Mr. Killifer graduated from Western State College with a Bachelor's Degree in education. He later went on to teach industrial arts, drafting and math at Revere High School in Ovid where he taught for 34 years retiring in 1998. Following his retirement he drove school bus for the Platte Valley School District where he worked until the time of his death. Gene was a member of the Julesburg Mennonite Church in Julesburg, Colorado and he enjoyed cooking breakfast for the Promise Keepers. He was a 4-H leader for Sedgwick County and was asked to judge for 4-H throughout the state and at the State Fair. One of his other passions was to help decorate for the Jr. and Sr. Prom at Revere High School. Survivors include his mother, Mabel Moist of Ovid, Colorado; 3 daughters, Kimberly Y. Cormier of Greeley, Colorado, Marcie L. Spiess of Evans, Colorado and Gloria Scalzo of Niagara Falls, New York; a son, Maurice Eugene Killifer Jr. of Niagara Falls, New York; 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and a brother, Don Killifer of Farmington, New Mexico. He is preceded in death by his father, Ralph Killifer; a daughter, Libby Killifer and a grandson, Jacob Spiess. A memorial service to celebrate Gene's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the Julesburg Mennonite Church in Julesburg, Colorado.
