Obituary

Robert Russell Anson of Greeley peacefully passed away surrounded by family, on April 30, 2025. Russ was born on August 8, 1941, in Trenton, New Jersey, to Edwin and Dorothy (McDonald) Anson.

After graduating from high school, he attended a local community college and continued to New Mexico State University. After proudly serving his country for four years in the Navy, he continued his education at Denver University and received his Juris Doctor in 1974.

He went into private practice after law school graduation and then as an Assistant Weld County Attorney before returning to private practice in municipal law during which time he represented the municipalities of Ault, Eaton, Evans, Grover, Johnstown, and Nunn.

Russ welcomed a son, Stephen in 1973, and a daughter, Katherine "Kira" in 1976. In 1988, Russ married Sandy Shiba, and they welcomed a daughter, Nicole in 1991.

Russ enjoyed playing tennis, camping, hiking and traveling. If he could have been out hiking every day of the week, he would have done so. He, at one time, had a goal of summitting all of the 14ers in Colorado and although not successful in that endeavor, he managed to summit several including Longs Peak more than once, one time enjoying the trek with his son, Stephen. Another hiking accomplishment was hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with his brother-in-law. He was an accomplished photographer and was rarely seen without his camera.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, children Stephen, Kira (Brendan Nostrant), Nicki (Evan) Anderson, grandchildren Beckett Russell, Sawyer Russell, Keiko Anderson, and brothers, Edwin Anson and Bruce Anson, in addition to numerous nephews and nieces.

No services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an Alzheimer's charity in his name.
