Obituary

Rosetta "Rose" May Gates (Schmeeckle), 98 1/2, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at NCMC. Born on October 4, 1927, in Merino to Fred and Gertrude Gates, Rose lived a long and meaningful life marked by hard work, resilience, and deep devotion to her family.

Rose married Floyd Schmeeckle on December 8, 1946. Together they raised a family and shared many years before divorcing in 1972.

Rose began her adult life as a farmer's wife and a cook for the children at the school in Stoneham, embracing the strength and determination that would define her throughout her years. She later worked as a cook and waitress at Brown's Café, where her warm smile and caring nature touched many. She also spent time making doughnuts at Daylight Doughnuts before retiring from The Greeley Place after years of dedicated service.

She was a devoted mother to Diana and Stewart Sheldon, Coleen and Leslie Kato, and Oran and Jennifer Schmeeckle. Rosie was in love with her 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Family was always at the center of Rose's life, and she treasured the many memories made with those she loved.

Rose will be remembered for her strong spirit, wonderful sense of humor, work ethic, kindness, and the wisdom gained from nearly a century of life. She leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, love, and quiet strength that will continue through the family and friends who cherished her.

Rose loved shopping and had a special talent for always finding the best bargain. She also had a generous heart and a deep desire to help others. Before entering the nursing home, she faithfully cooked meals for homebound people, making sure they were cared for and never forgotten.

Rose spent many years volunteering at Weld County Food Bank, where she lovingly helped feed families in need. A reflection of the generous heart she shared with everyone.

Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Rose is survived by her children, Diana, Coleen, and Oran and their families. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Gertrude Gates; her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Gerald Jobe; and her brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Pauline Gates.

A celebration of Rose’s life will be announced at a later date.

Please wear cheerful colors in honor of Rose's bright spirit.
