Roy Cameron, 87 of Greeley passed away peacefully in Greeley on January 2, 2018.

He is survived by his wife June, and his children Kay (Paul), Cindy (Antonio), and Ken (Haesook), as well as his 6 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Roy was born to a farming family. He started his education in a 1-room country school, and went on to join the ROTC at the University of Illinois where he graduated with a BA in Teaching of Biological Sciences.

Upon graduation, he entered active duty in the US Army, and was sent to Korea just before the end of the Korean War. In Korea, he was promoted and made chief of materials handling equipment for the port of Pusan. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

After leaving the army, he returned to the University of Illinois, where he earned a Masters in Science. Soon after he was married to the love of his life, June, and began a family. After several years in the Army Reserves, he retired from the Army as Captain. He taught high school in Illinois for 11 years before leaving for Greeley.

Roy was one of the first faculty members hired by Aims Community College when it opened in Greeley in 1967, and taught there until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure at Aims he served as Chair of the Math and Science Department, was elected State Chairman of the Outstanding Biology Teachers Program in Colorado in 1972, served as President of the Faculty Association, and was named Teacher of the Year in 1987 by the Colorado State Board of Education. He served on the Board of Directors for the College Credit Union for 21 years. He sponsored exchange students and student clubs, and was an active member of the Greeley Shutterbugs with his wife June. Even after retirement, he continued supporting Aims students by serving as an academic advisor for several years.

Roy enjoyed traveling the world, photography, birding, and spending time with family and friends. He had a kind spirit, a great sense of humor, and was loved by all.

Private family services will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
