Ruby A. Vogel, 84 of Greeley, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Garden Square of Westlake Assisted Living. Ruby Alice Vogel was born on February 4, 1930, the second and only living child of Christopher and Susanna Mae (Edgerton) Brinkman in Bayard, Nebraska. Her older brother Paul died as an infant.Ruby attended school in Bayard and upon graduation worked for a local mercantile store where she sold just about anything and everything including furniture & jewelry. She then went to work for Great Western Sugar Company, first in Bayard and then later in Denver. In 1957, she was transferred to Denver where she worked as a statistical typist in the Engineering Department, assisting approximately 17 engineers. She told the story that when she was offered the job in Denver, she prayed that if she was supposed to take this job, they would offer her $15 more per month (the typical raise was about $6 per month), which they did! She also didn't have a car, a place to live or any way to get to Denver but God opened all those doors and she moved into a rooming house in Denver with a former classmate who also was moving to Denver & helped her make the move. She worked for Great Western until her marriage to Don on December 27, 1959. She did go back to work for Great Western for the next several years to help during Campaign (sugar beet harvest & processing).The story is told that Don was looking for a wife who could cook and play piano, and while he only got one of those things, he did teach her to cook! She treated him like a god for the first few years serving him burnt offerings at almost every meal!Ruby & Don resided in Prospect Valley, where their two children were born, Jeanette in 1960 and Don in 1965. They farmed and endured some very tough years when the hail took out crops. Ruby obtained the reputation for being able to drive a straight line in the field and had the job of cultivating crops and plowing which also earned her the nice tractor with a cab, radio & air conditioning!After moving to Greeley in 1988, Ruby went to work for Ag Tax in Ft Collins, later working at Zetor Tractor in Greeley and finally at St Paul's Congregational church also in Greeley, retiring in 2011.Ruby started playing the piano at young child because she was an only child and there were no neighborhood children around. Her father was a blacksmith and a customer couldn't pay their bill so they gave the family their piano. Ruby played for many of the funerals of the soldiers killed in World War II as well as playing for church and weddings. She played at Calvary Temple when they attended there and then at Prospect Community Church & St Paul's Congregational church. She and Don made a great team as she accompanied him for many weddings and funerals over the years. She taught piano lessons while they lived in Prospect Valley to supplement the family income and had 20-30 piano students at a time. She accompanied school programs and also accompanied the Community Choirs that Don directed. She played for her own enjoyment as well as for those around her.Ruby and Don were Campus Life directors for over 10 years at Weld Central High School. She was active in the Greeley Wesleyan Church choir and the Keene Age Singers until her death.Ruby had a tremendous sense of humor and an ornery streak! We suspect that she was instrumental in putting rubber worms in Donny's sandwiches and may have had a part in short-sheeting his bed. She tricked the staff at Grace Pointe by propping up a blanket with Alex & Kori's life sized pictures on the chair using pillows to hold it in place. When the staff came in during the night time, it looked like someone was sitting in the chair. Even in her final days when she didn't feel good, she was still able to stick out her tongue and grin when she didn't like something that was said or done.Music was her life and we are sure that she is playing for Dad & the angels now! She was preceded in death by her husband Don (2012), her parents, and her brother Paul.She is survived by: daughter Jeanette (Dan) Sisson, Greeley, son Don (Christine) Vogel, Hudson, grandchildren, Alex & Kori Vogel and her brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Jim (Jackie) Vogel, Spring, TX, Ken (Doreen) Vogel, Reno, NV, Tim (Nancy) Vogel, La Connor, WA and Martha Anne (Annie) Vogel, Greeley, CO and a cousin, Bill Pegg of Milpitas, CA. Services will begin with a Visitation on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 from 10:00 –11:00 a.m. at the Greeley Wesleyan Church, 3600 W. 22nd Street in Greeley followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment Linn Grove Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Wesleyan Church Choir or to the charity of choice.
