ORTIZ Samuel "Sammy" Ortiz, 62 of Greeley, died on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the North Colorado Medical Center. He was born on June 21, 1944 in Greeley to Rufino and Ramona (Martinez) Ortiz. Sammy married Phyllis Sanchez on June 22, 1996 in Greeley. He has lived in Greeley for most of his life other than living in California for 2 years. He attended Lincoln School and Heath Junior High School. Mr. Ortiz worked for Weld County Buildings and Grounds for 21 years until his retirement. He was a hard working Christian man who was a big Bronco's fan and enjoyed spending his quiet time fishing and keeping his yard beautiful and green. He helped build and lived in the first Habitat for Humanity home in Greeley. He was a good husband, dad, grandpa, uncle and friend. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Ortiz of Greeley; 6 daughters, Valerie Gonzales-De Santiago of Brighton, CO, Marcella Ortiz & husband Gabriel Ferrusquilla of Henderson, CO, Melissa Gonzales & husband Jesse Camacho of Greeley, Josephine Gonzales & husband Russell Brewer of Greeley, Katrina Ortiz of Greeley and Ramona Ortiz of Greeley; 22 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; 5 sisters, Nora Lujan of Evans, Rebecca Hernandez of Greeley, Rachel Hernandez of Windsor, Lucy Losoya of Texas and Dina Torres of Sterling and a brother, Leonard Ortiz of Kersey. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Pedro Ortiz, a sister, Lisa Gonzales and a grandchild, Jerimiah Davilla. A memorial service to celebrate Sammy's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Church of God of Prophecy Church, 110 W. 25th Avenue Court in Greeley. A reception for family and friends will follow the services. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Moser Funeral Service Chapel, 3501 S. 11th Avenue in Evans. Memorial gifts may be made to the Sammy Ortiz memorial fund for the family to help save their home. It is the one place they all can go to remember all the cherished time with him. He built and respected our home.
