Obituary

Susan "Alex" Bourke, 64, of Ault, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at her home. She was born March 31, 1945 in Holstein, Iowa to Woodrow Wilson and Verdonna Mae (Sindt) Alexander. Susan was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 1999 after which she worked as a missionary in Western Mongolia from the summer of 1999 until her death. She taught English to the Kazakh people for the first 3 years and then founded the Altai Craft Women's Project. Many of the poorest women of Olgii, Mongolia were able to feed and clothe their families from the proceeds of their beautiful handiwork. In 2007, she moved to Ault, Colorado to be with her daughter where she continued to fight her battle with cancer while working with the women of Mongolia from her home. Survivors include her mother, Verdonna Thorpe, of Denver, Colorado, her son, Joshua Bourke, of San Diego, California, her daughter, Ruth Bourke, of Ault, Colorado, and 3 brothers: Pastor Jeffrey Alexander, of Lamar, Colorado, Thomas Alexander, of Golden, Colorado and David Alexander, of Golden, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her father, Woodrow Wilson Alexander. Memorial services were held on Saturday, December 5, at the Cornerstone Community Church in Ault, Colorado at 10 AM and Beth Eden Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado at 2 PM.
